RED & BLUE brings climate change risks into focus through interdisciplinary research programme |
A combination of natural phenomena such as rising river and sea levels, erosion and more extreme weather conditions are exposing the real estate world to new challenges and risks: in a nutshell, climate change. These risks need to be taken particularly seriously in the Netherlands given the country’s location in a delta. ‘RED & BLUE’ - which stands for Real Estate Development and Building in Low Urban Environments - is taking up the gauntlet and investigating the risks of a changing climate for real estate in low-lying urban areas. The consortium – which Bouwinvest is a member of – brings together public and private parties to find solutions. Various Bouwinvest employees are involved in the research programmes, where knowledge is exchanged freely. Professor Ellen van Bueren, Professor of Urban Development Management at Delft University of Technology, is responsible for the multi-disciplinary programme and offers us an insight into the RED & BLUE research department. ‘If we don't take action now, the losses will be insurmountable'. HomePlan Foundation and Bouwinvest: a 10-year sustainable partnership |
A roof over your head Bouwinvest is celebrating the 10th anniversary of our partnership with HomePlan through an educational meeting at Provada, the annual real estate trade fair in Amsterdam, in mid-June. We made our first donation to the HomePlan Foundation in 2012 and Bouwinvest employees accompanied Homeplan on the first joint house-building trip two years later in 2014. The partnership is in line with Bouwinvest’s investment strategy, which aims to create real value for life by generating social as well as financial returns. Our asset management activities not only contribute to a more sustainable, liveable and accessible urban environment, but also towards higher pension pay-outs. We are not doing this on our own: we have brought together a large network of parties with whom we cooperate in various ways to achieve our common objectives. We invest time and money in them as well as expertise because we believe that all parties and, ultimately, society, will benefit from them in the long run. For example, we partner with organisations such as ULI, Holland Metropole, IVBN and INREV, and we sponsor numerous charities who share our goal to give disadvantaged people around the world a roof over their heads. Bouwinvest develops ‘Home for Life’ label to allow tenants to assess whether their homes are lifecycle-proof |
Bouwinvest’s Dutch Residential Fund has created a ‘Home for Life’ label to allow tenants to see whether their residence is lifecycle-proof or not. ‘The certificate is comparable to widely known sustainability ratings such as the EPC label,’ according to Rob Linssen, project and asset manager at Bouwinvest’s Residential Fund. “EPC labels offer insights into the energy performance of a home, but no such rating system existed until now for whether an apartment is lifecycle-proof. Together with our knowledge partners we have developed a methodology enabling an independent party to determine, with the help of a checklist, whether tenants can continue to stay in their home as they grow older and if so, for how long." |
